Community leaders, clergy, and students gathered for the commissioning of the renovated St. Peter’s Secondary School, Awomnuzie, in Ikwuano Local Council of Abia State, have praised Dr Godwin Nwabunka, a local indigene and an economist, for his role in transforming the 38-year-old institution.
The renovation was funded through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2022 between the Umuahia Catholic Diocese and Grooming Centre, where Dr Noel Ihebuzor serves as Chairman of the Governing Council.
Under the agreement, the Grooming Centre provided financial support for refurbishing the school buildings and installing modern learning and laboratory facilities. The Diocese committed to maintaining the facilities and promoting the school as a hub for learning and youth development.
At the commissioning, Nwabunka explained that his investment in education stemmed from a deep commitment to youth and community development aimed at positively impacting lives.
He urged other stakeholders to join efforts to advance the community, envisioning the area as a future innovation centre. Despite contributions from individuals and private sector groups, Nwabunka noted that significant infrastructural needs remain.
He appealed to the government to create a supportive environment by implementing policies to improve roads, communication, security, land access, reliable power, water, and housing to enhance the community’s growth potential further.
Ihebuzor encouraged the community to protect the revitalised school and called on other community members to emulate Nwabunka’s dedication to transforming the area.
