High courts and magistrate courts in Abia State have resumed operations after a month-long strike by judiciary workers. The Abia State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) announced the suspension of its industrial action on January 30, 2025, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government.
The strike, which began on January 2, 2025, was due to disagreements over the implementation of the new minimum wage. Despite reaching an agreement on January 20, 2025, JUSUN continued the strike until the state government fulfilled its promise to pay the additional amount.
The union expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for his prompt intervention and commitment to resolving the dispute. The reopening of the courts marks a significant milestone in JUSUN’s struggle for the financial autonomy and independence of the judiciary.
