The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged the State government to direct the director Anambra Road Management Agency (ARMA) to install speed brakers and visual warning signs at Agu Awka and Odumodu junction.
The House resolution was sequel to a motion moved by the member representing Njikoka II, Mr Jude Akpua and was seconded by Mr Johnbosco Akaegbobi, Nnewi South II, during plenary on July 18.
The sipeaker, Mr Somotochukwu Udeze who presided the plenary session had moved for the resolution of the House while the lawmakers unanimously adopted it through voice votes.
Mr Akpua noted that the aforementioned junctions on Awka_Onitsha expressway are busy junctions.
“These junctions have proven to be prone to frequent road traffic crashes that have resulted in the loss of lives and property by road users who are mostly Ndi Anambra.
“The proposed speed brakers and visual warning signs will help avert and reduce these road accidents to the barest minimum as well as save livey and property,” Mr Akpua noted.
Mr Innocent Ojike, representing Oyi constituency, confirmed that the rate of accidents on the said road is alarming, calling on ARMA for urgent intervention.
Furthermore, Mr Chimezie Ikwunne, Awka North, noted that it is the duty of the government to protect lives and property of its citizens and as such urgent steps are needed to avoid more casualties.
Mr Anayo Okpalaeke, Aguata I, advised that ARMA should liase with FERMA for optimal result and supported the installation of visual signs on the road.
The majority leader, Mr Ikenna Ofodeme, Ekwusigo, noted that visual warning signs would help control the drivers especially those who travel at night to be fully aware of how the roads are and help them to understand the road better.
Mr Noble Igwe, Ogbaru I; Mr Ejike Ikechukwu, Anaocha II; Mr Fredrick Ezenwa, Onitsha South I, others spoke in support of the motion.
The House was adjourned to July, 20.
