The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), during its third meeting of the year on Friday, February 17, 2025, reaffirmed that the state government is in the process of documenting traditional medicine practitioners, commonly referred to as native doctors. However, it clarified that this does not equate to registering or certifying them for practice. Investigations are ongoing into those currently in custody on suspicion of malpractice or criminal activity, and anyone found guilty will face the full weight of the law.
This clarification is contained in a signed press release by Dr Law Mefor, Anambra State Commissioner for Information.
He further stated that in line with the Anambra State Homeland Law 2025, the Council directed that communities documenting non-indigenes must do so without imposing any fees. This process, he emphasized, is a social responsibility rather than a revenue-generating venture.
Additionally, ANSEC approved requests from several communities seeking government takeover of secondary schools they had independently built and maintained. These schools will be upgraded to the standard of public secondary institutions, with their teachers integrated into the state’s workforce. Where necessary, additional teachers will be recruited to strengthen the teaching staff.
As part of its commitment to infrastructural development, the state government approved a contract worth ₦801,534,464 for the construction of the Nzam headquarters road in Anambra West Local Government Area. The project has been awarded to Kanubeen Construction Ltd. with a completion timeline of six weeks.
Further demonstrating its investment in education, the government also allocated ₦48,500,000 for the construction of staff offices, an examination hall, and a laboratory building at Urban Boys Secondary School, Fegge, Onitsha South Local Government Area. The contract for this project was awarded to Harriets Millennium Estate Nigeria Ltd.
These decisions reflect the state government’s ongoing efforts to enhance security, community welfare, and infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development in Anambra State.
