As Anambra State gears up for the November 2025 gubernatorial election, three leading candidates—Governor Chukwuma Soludo (APGA), Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu (APC), and Sir Paul Chukwuma (YPP)—are vying to inherit the formidable political structure built by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Before his passing in July 2024, Ubah had established a powerful grassroots network that spanned various sectors of Anambra society. His influence was so strong that he won back-to-back Senate elections under the relatively unknown Young Progressives Party (YPP), defeating candidates from more established parties. His success was attributed to his strategic alliances, media presence, and security backing, all of which contributed to his dominance in Anambra politics.
Following his death, political figures have been courting the leaders of Ubah’s numerous support groups, hoping to secure their backing ahead of the election. Among these groups are Ubah Nation Media, Afaigbonefuna, Ifeanyi Ubah Solidarity Movement, and the Ikemba Front, which collectively formed the Ifeanyi Ubah Political Family.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has already welcomed a faction of Ubah’s supporters into APGA, hosting a massive rally at the International Convention Center in Awka. Soludo acknowledged Ubah’s contributions to Anambra politics and expressed regret over his untimely passing, promising to immortalize his legacy.
Meanwhile, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the APC candidate, has also gained the support of some factions within Ubah’s political family, particularly members of the Ikemba Front. His supporters argue that Ubah would have been more inclined to back an APC candidate rather than Soludo, whom he frequently criticized.
The battle for Ubah’s political structure has intensified, with loyalists divided over which candidate best represents his vision. While some have aligned with Soludo, others insist that Ubah’s legacy should remain independent of political maneuvering.
As the election approaches, the influence of Ubah’s political machinery remains a key factor in determining the outcome. Whether his legacy will be fully absorbed into APGA, APC, or YPP remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—his impact on Anambra politics continues to shape the state’s political landscape
