Anambra Speaker Assures Displaced Flood Victims of Government Support

The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr Uche Okafor, has assured displaced flood disaster victims in Ayamelum Local Government Area (LGA), of government’s support and intervention.

Okafor gave the assurance when he traveled by boat to visit the victims of the ravaging flood at a Holding Camp at Community Primary School in Igbakwu Community.

While sympathizing with them, he said that the State Government was making efforts to provide them with relief materials and basic healthcare to cushion the effects of the disaster.

“I came for an on-the-spot assessment of the damages caused by the natural disaster and the losses incurred as a result of the ugly trend so that government can intervene.

“I urge you to remain calm and safe as Anambra State and Federal Governments will supply all you need to be comfortable at the camp.

“We will also ensure that relevant government agencies like NEMA and SEMA rise to the responsibility of coming to the aid of our people. Be assured of my continued support, as always,” he said.

In his remarks, the Transition Committee Chairman, Ayamelum LGA, Chief Livinus Onyenwehe,, who took the Speaker round the communities affected by the fdisaster, commended him for showing concern.He urged other relevant agencies to come to their rescue.

Earlier, Mr Ezechukwu Chetauya,one of the displaced persons said that they suffered heavy losses as the flood submerged their homes, destroyed their properties and washed away the crops on their farmlands.

Spokes person for the displaced persons, Mr Patrick Onyeibo, said that he lost his cassava and rice farms to the disaster but managed to harvest his yam.

He urged government at all levels to provide them with alternative sources of livelihood.

The Speaker and his team also visited other victims of the disaster who were resettled at Central Primary School, Ifite-Ogwari and Otaku Primary School, Omor, both in Ayamelum LGA.
