Every household in Anambra State is to have a waste bin provided by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) before the end of the year.
The same goes to business premises, hospitality industries, schools and other public places.
The Managing Director of ASWAMA, Sir Mike Ozoemena said this while addressing the Sanitation Committee of Awka South Local Government Area at the Local Government headquarters, Amawbia.
He noted that the present administration is very serious with the issue of environmental sanitation as it is in line with one of the pillars of the administration aimed at aggressively tackling the existential threat posed by the environment, towards obtaining clean, green, planned and sustainable cities.
The ASWAMA Boss urged the Councilors who are Chairmen of their various wards and the Contractors to brace up to this challenge and ensure that their various domains were kept clean.
“The governor is very explicit on this subject and have made it clear at the State Executive Council meeting that anybody who cannot ensure the cleanliness of his domain should resign,” he noted.
Mr. Ozoemena stressed that the policy of no refuse in the street has not changed however, he noted that with all hands on deck, “we will become efficient enough to ensure speedy evacuation of waste from homes”.
He urged waste management contractors to explore the services of tricycle operators in refuse collection to ensure adequate coverage of all hinterlands.
The Transition Committee (TC) Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Mr. ThankGod Aniago while welcoming participants to the meeting thanked the waste management contractors for their steadfastness.
He announced that the enumeration of households and business establishments in the LGAs as well as the distribution of demand notices very important.
“Every ward has their Sanitation Committee, the Councilors should mobilize their various committees and ensure a smooth take off of the exercise in their various domains.
“Identication cards for a period of one month will be provided for all the enumerators, this is to gaurantee your security and efficient service delivery.
“It is expected that this enumeration exercise will cover households, hospitality industries, schools hospitals, business centers and others. A minimum of five thousand households is expected to be registered in each village.”
