The contemporary workforce is undergoing a seismic shift, transitioning from manual labor towards a demand for digital proficiency, driven by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report highlights the urgency of this shift, projecting the displacement of 92 million jobs and the creation of 170 million new roles dependent on digital literacy.
Recognizing this transformation, the Imo State government under Governor Hope Uzodimma launched SkillUpImo, a comprehensive human capacity and digital skills literacy program. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Digital Economy and e-Government, this initiative aims to equip 300,000 Imolites with in-demand Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills between 2022 and 2026, positioning Imo State as a leader in Nigeria’s digital revolution.
The program focuses on critical 4IR domains such as software development, artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, computer appreciation, and cloud computing. To date, over 40,000 youths have received training, with notable inclusivity: 43% male, 53% female, and 2% individuals with disabilities.
SkillUpImo has forged strategic partnerships with global technology leaders, including Microsoft (Wootlab Foundation) and Cisco Networking Academy, providing access to internationally recognized certifications. Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Digital SME Alliance connects Imo talent with European employment opportunities.
The program extends beyond classroom training, fostering innovation through dedicated hubs and centers that offer mentorship, advanced tools, and funding opportunities. Events like Hack4FUTO encourage creativity and the development of real-world solutions, nurturing a thriving entrepreneurial environment.
By addressing the global digital skills gap, which affects both individuals and organizations, SkillUpImo aims to prepare Imolites for local and global tech opportunities, contributing to Nigeria’s broader digital economy strategy. The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS), which aims to achieve a $1 trillion digital economy by 2030.
With these efforts, Imo State is positioning itself as a leader in integrating AI and technological innovation into its educational framework, ensuring its students are equipped to navigate and shape the future responsibly.
