Senator Anthony Ani, who represents Ebonyi South Senatorial District, has stirred widespread criticism after distributing cooking utensils to his constituents as an empowerment initiative.
On Tuesday, Ani handed out long spoons, brand new cooking pots, and charcoal cookers to hundreds of women in the district. The event, which was intended to serve as a grassroots support program, has been met with mockery and outrage across the state, particularly among his constituents.

Many residents expressed disappointment, claiming the gesture falls short of meaningful development or empowerment. Critics argue that Senator Ani has failed to attract substantial projects to the region and has instead resorted to symbolic handouts with little practical value.
“This is an insult to the intelligence of the people,” said one local resident. “We need roads, healthcare, and schools—not cooking pots.”

The backlash follows earlier criticism against Ani for announcing a medical outreach program scheduled to take place in Abuja. That move sparked confusion and anger, with many questioning why a senator representing Ebonyi South would sponsor a healthcare initiative outside his constituency. Residents accused him of neglecting the people who elected him and focusing instead on irrelevant locations.
Opposition voices and civil society groups have also condemned the senator’s actions. Several political analysts describe the gesture as tone-deaf and indicative of a broader disconnect between elected officials and their constituents.
“There is a growing demand for accountability and real impact,” said a political analyst based in Abakaliki. “Tokenism like this cannot replace genuine representation.”

Despite the controversy, Ani has not issued any official statement in response to the criticisms. As public frustration grows, political observers suggest that the senator may face increased pressure ahead of the next election cycle.
Many constituents are now calling for more transparent, need-based empowerment programs that reflect the realities and urgent needs of Ebonyi South residents.
