Enugu State Signs MoUs with Fungtai Engineering, NCAN to Boost Agriculture and Industrialisation
The Enugu State Government has signed two significant Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at advancing agriculture and agro-industrialisation in the state. The agreements, involving Fungtai Engineering Ltd. and the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), are set to transform the state’s agricultural landscape and create numerous job opportunities.
The first MoU, signed with Fungtai Engineering Ltd., focuses on the cultivation of cash crops across 7,221 hectares of agricultural land located in Ugwujoro, Nimbo, within Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. The initiative aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to boost agriculture, improve security, and drive employment in the region.
Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. ChidiebereOnyia, explained that the project would not only enhance agricultural production but also address security concerns in the border area between Enugu and Kogi states, which has previously faced security challenges. “This massive agricultural initiative will occupy the land, reducing any potential for criminal activity,” Mbah stated. He emphasized the role of agriculture in growing the state’s GDP, aiming for a $30bn economy in the next six years.
The Managing Director of Fungtai Engineering Ltd, Sir Isaac Chuks, expressed confidence in the project’s success, commending the Enugu State Government for prioritizing agriculture and creating a conducive environment for investment. “We are excited to partner with the state and will ensure this initiative makes the people of Enugu proud,” Chuks assured.
The second MoU, signed with the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), aims to establish a pre-fabricated domestic export warehouse at the Enugu State Polytechnic in Iwollo. This warehouse will help aggregate and process cashew production locally, tapping into the global $7bn cashew industry. Governor Mbah, also represented by Prof. Onyia, highlighted the economic potential of the cashew industry and expressed the state’s commitment to supporting this initiative, which will create significant job opportunities and add value to the state’s economy.
Dr. Ojo Joseph Ajanaku, National President of NCAN, assured the state government of timely and reliable delivery on the project, adding that the collaboration would boost cashew production, encourage local farmers, and support domestic processors. Ajanaku also revealed plans to revitalize the Premier Cashew Industry Limited at AkamaOghe as part of this strategic partnership.
These initiatives reflect Enugu State’s commitment to leveraging its agricultural potential for economic transformation, job creation, and industrial growth, positioning the state as a key player in Nigeria’s agro-industrialisation.
