Enugu – The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged shooting and killing of a young man, Smith Odinaka, in the state. This was revealed in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Odinaka was reportedly shot near the Mercedes-Benz Company premises on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway around 1 a.m. on October 13. The state police chief has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take immediate action to investigate the incident.
Commissioner Uzuegbu assured the public that every effort would be made to identify those responsible for the shooting and ensure justice is served.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the victim was driving a Mercedes-Benz car, accompanied by two male friends, when a gunshot, allegedly fired by individuals suspected to be security agents, hit the vehicle. Odinaka sustained a gunshot wound to his left hip,” the statement read.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Odinaka was later pronounced dead by medical personnel, and his body has since been deposited in a mortuary, awaiting an autopsy.
The police statement also clarified that-, contrary to rumors, no police officer or team has been linked to the crime thus far.
The Commissioner emphasized that intensive efforts are underway to uncover the truth, and the findings of the investigation will be made public once complete.
