The Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, has launched a commendable initiative to improve maternal health care by providing free ultrasound services in primary health centres across the state’s 17 local governments. This initiative aims to safeguard the lives of unborn babies and ensure the safety of mothers during childbirth.
Dr. Ifenyinwa Ani-Oshekun, Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, highlighted the administration’s commitment to offering affordable and accessible quality health care. The ultrasound services will be free for every pregnant woman during the first month. The program, in partnership with Elephants Technology, initially starts at the Asata and Abakpa Primary Health Centres, with plans to expand statewide.
The importance of ultrasound services in monitoring the health of both mother and baby was emphasized, ensuring early detection of potential issues. Governor Mbah’s administration has also recruited 450 primary health care workers and plans to add 1,750 more this year to enhance service delivery.
Dr. Sunny Okafor, Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Enugu, praised the initiative for its potential to improve maternal healthcare, quality of life for pregnant women, and reduce maternal deaths. The program aims to raise awareness and encourage pregnant women to utilize these facilities.
