Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim has said that it is alarming the level of destruction left in the wake of flood disaster in Ogbaru Local Government Area.
The Deputy Governor visited the area, October 5 to have a firsthand sight of the extent of damages caused by the flood.
Dr. Ibezim who could not hide his surprise at the level of destructions on ground promised the people that government will do everything possible to return smiles to their faces.
Some of the victims narrated their experiences to Information Officers who were also on ground to hear from them; Mr. Izuchukwu Odoh said, “all the communities of Ogbaru Local Government, including, Iyiowa Odekpe, Atani, Ohita, Ossamala, Umunankwo, Akili-ogidi, Akili-ozizor, umuzu have lost houses, crops and properties worth billions of naira to this flooding.
“Due to the outbreak of the flood, the Atani road that leads to the Secretariat at Ogbaru and other areas in the communities have been submerged by the raging flood waters.
“The effect of the damages cannot be ameliorated just by sending people to camps because so many people’s lives and properties have been seriously affected and it will take a lot to resettle them.
“We are begging the State Government to do so much in alleviating the sufferings of people of this area; relief materials should be taken to markets and streets as majority of displaced persons are seeking their shelter in those areas.
“The flood has seriously threatened our lives and our means of livelihood; it has taken over churches, markets, roads, shops and schools. Too sad.’’
