In line with government’s primary role which is to protect life and property, the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo had visited flood displaced persons at the Bishop Ajayi Crowther Memorial Primary School Holding Camp, Onitsha.
The flood victims in the camp are mainly from Anam and Olumbanassa communities from Anambra West Local Government Area.
No fewer than 400 persons from Oko, Delta State joined in the camp yesterday because the Asaba camp could not take more persons at the moment.
In his speech, Gov. Soludo noted that the visit to the camp was second after visiting Ogbaru LGA.
“I am here to see things for myself, having got pictorial and video displays of the devastating flooding, as government and in the spirit of ‘be your brother’s keeper – onye aghana nwanne ya’, we are here to provide good and decent shelter, food to everyone affected by flood in the State.”
He directed the Commissioner for Utility, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka to take care of some of their needs, which he promised to put in place within 24 hours.
While urging the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come over and assist the victims and also complement the state government, he encouraged well spirited Ndi Anambra and corporate bodies to equally assist.
In an interview after the Governpr’s visit, the member representing Onitsha North II in the State House of Assembly who is equally the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Candidate for Onitsha North/South, Federal Constituency in the forthcoming 2023 election, Mr. Edward Ibuzo, pleaded with them to take heart.
“This is a natural disaster, I blamed nobody for it, it is reoccurring; I will call the attention of the Governor for a permanent camp because these camps are primary schools which will affect the pupils of the schools who will not be going to school at this time.
“I will make sure that I go back to visit again though I have been there early today before the returning with the governor but I will go back there again to do my own gifting and also make sure that those promises of the governor were made available.”
He urged the Federal Government to come to the aid of Anambra State by providing permanent camps for emergencies like this.
