The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh has charged members of staff of Anambra State Polytechnic (ANSPOLY), to function with the mission and objectives of the Polytechnic.
Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh gave the admonition while interacting with the staff members at the Ministry of Education Conference Hall, Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.
The Commissioner who expressed displeasure over the ways things are being handled at the Polytechnic charged the workers to go back to the drawing board, get acquainted with the mission and objectives of the school and incorporate them into the course of discharging their duties as well as in the decision-making processes.
“Every Institution of learning should depict and reflect the mission and objectives for which it was established; this should be seen in the structure and ambience in the school that it leaves no one in doubt.
“The responsibility of bringing such into fruition lies on the shoulders of the workers; being a staff in an educational space is different from other organisations, hence the need to live above reproach and standing on the sides of truth.
“Staff in the educational space should know that they are charged with the responsibility of leaving a positive image in the hearts of students. According to the commissioner, certain behaviours should not be seen in a citadel of learning as they are in the business of managing lives.’’
Prof. Chuma -Udeh further explained that as moulders of characters, they should serve as exemplary models to the students and that Karma has a way of paying back defaulters.
She told the workers to go back and put plans in motion on how best to drive the Institution forward while hinting that the State Government might not be favourably disposed to the idea of injecting money into an institution that does not show a corresponding output.
The commissioner charged them to do away with the mindset of, ‘what is in it for me, what will the government do for me,’ and strive towards bringing forth creative ideas and programmes to move the state forward, adding that the rebranding and restructuring of Anambra is a collaborative venture.
She charged the governing council of the institution with the task of finding ways to turn the vast expanse of land at their disposal into a revenue-generating asset for the Polytechnic.
Reacting, a senior staff member of the Institution, Dr Ekene Nwankwo, commended the efforts of the state government in the education sector and pledged the readiness of the workers to work with the government to move the Polytechnic forward.
The visitors presented a 10kg bag of yellow garri sourced and produced by the Agric Department of the Institution to the commissioner.
