The African Action Congress (AAC) in the Federal Capital Territory has denounced the prosecution of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore by the Nigerian Police. In a statement signed by Agena Robert Ande, Chairman of the AAC FCT Abuja Chapter, the party condemned the illegal arrest of Sowore, describing it as a blatant disregard for the law and his fundamental human rights.
The AAC emphasized that any attempt to intimidate Sowore will be resisted, and the party will not stand idly by while its leaders are harassed for speaking truth to power. The party reiterated its commitment to fighting for justice, equality, and transparency in Nigeria.
Sowore’s arrest, after he willingly honored a police invitation, was labeled a gross abuse of power and a threat to democracy. The AAC warned the Nigeria Police that any further attempts to harass or intimidate Sowore would be heavily resisted.
The party also called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, citing his illegal tenure extension as a clear example of the corruption and impunity that Sowore is fighting against. The AAC urged all Nigerians to stand with them in condemning this abuse of power and demanding respect for fundamental human rights.
During the week, Nigerian police filed 16 cybercrime-related charges against Sowore, citing his statements that Egbetokun was illegally occupying the position of Inspector General of Police. Sowore argued that Egbetokun should have retired from the force, a claim the police force strongly refutes. The Federal High Court in Abuja granted Sowore bail set at N10 million.
