The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has prohibited the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, and the Vigilante Corps from participating in the upcoming Ondo governorship election. The election, scheduled for November 16, 2024, will see the participation of 17 political parties.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IG announced that officers from various specialized units, such as the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Special Protection Unit, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, and K-9 Unit, will be deployed for security duties. Additionally, aerial patrols using police helicopters and gunboat patrols in the state’s waterways and riverine areas will be carried out to ensure comprehensive security coverage.
Adejobi emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is fully prepared to guarantee a peaceful and orderly election process across Ondo’s 18 Local Government Areas, 203 Wards, and 3,933 Polling Units. He reassured the public that extensive plans have been put in place, including the strategic deployment of personnel, resources, and advanced equipment.
The IG also confirmed that officers from various specialized units, including the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit, and other agencies, will work in coordination with other security services. These measures will be executed in strict adherence to the guidelines of the Electoral Act, 2022, ensuring a transparent, fair, and orderly election.
