The people of Amazi, Umunakanu Ama in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State have staged a peaceful protest against the siting of a borrow pit in their community, citing concerns over environmental degradation and infrastructure neglect.
The borrow pit, where sand is being excavated by a contractor allegedly linked to the Governor Hope Uzodimma administration, is feared to exacerbate erosion and landslides in the area. Community members expressed frustration over failed attempts to engage local government authorities, urging urgent intervention.
Prominent figures from the community, including Engr. Uche Okafor and Nze Lucius Nnorom, lamented the lack of response despite multiple pleas to local officials. They emphasized that Amazi suffers from inadequate infrastructure, including poor roads, lack of water supply, and absence of electricity.
The protesters called on Governor Uzodimma to halt further excavation, address the looming environmental risks, and provide essential infrastructure to uplift the community. Residents hope the state government will take swift action to prevent further hardship.
