As part of activities marking the 61st anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Air Officer Commanding (AOC), Ground Training Command (GTC), Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Ahmed Shinkafi, has called on youths from the South-East to consider careers in the Nigerian Air Force.
Speaking during an Open Day event held in Enugu at the weekend, AVM Shinkafi—represented by the Chief of Staff of the GTC, AVM Anthony Martins—expressed concern over the low participation of South-East youths in the Nigerian military and paramilitary services.
“You can build a distinguished career and contribute to national development by serving in the Nigerian Air Force,” Shinkafi said. “NAF offers continuous career progression, educational opportunities, and training within and outside the country.”
He also emphasized the importance of gender inclusivity, noting that the NAF welcomes and encourages the enlistment of female officers, combatants, and airwomen.
“We want more females to join the NAF and contribute their energy, ideas, and innovation to help combat emerging security threats and keep our nation safe,” he added.
Shinkafi appealed to traditional and community leaders present to help sensitize the youth and encourage enlistment to meet the quota allocated to South-East states. He stressed that diversity in recruitment enriches the Air Force’s operational efficiency.
The AOC noted that NAF remains a key force in Africa’s air combat operations, with active participation in peacekeeping missions and a reputation for tactical excellence.
“NAF operations are driven by cutting-edge technology, modern aircraft, advanced weaponry, and highly trained personnel committed to precision and mission success,” he said.
In his remarks, the Sarkin Hausawa of Enugu State, Alhaji Abubakar Sambo, congratulated the NAF on its 61st anniversary and praised its unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity. He described the Open Day as a valuable platform for civil-military engagement.
Students who participated in the event shared their excitement and renewed interest in careers with the Air Force.
Master Ralph Uchechukwu of Nike Grammar School, Abakpa, expressed fascination with aircraft operations and maintenance procedures. “I would love to become a pilot in the Nigerian Air Force after this experience,” he said.
Miss Nonye Onyeabor of New Haven Secondary School, Emene, said the event gave her a new perspective. “NAF offers promising career opportunities for girls like me to excel,” she noted.
Highlights of the Open Day included documentary screenings on NAF history and operations, exhibitions, a tour of photo galleries and mini-museums, inspection of Air Force platforms, interactive sessions, and group photographs.
