The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the relocation of its 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to Enugu, citing unconstitutional governance in Rivers State. The decision follows the federal government’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers and the appointment of a Sole Administrator, a retired military officer, to govern the state.
The NBA expressed concerns over the Sole Administrator’s leadership style, which allegedly disregards constitutional provisions, court rulings, and democratic processes. The association emphasized that holding the conference in Rivers would tacitly endorse constitutional violations and undermine the rule of law.
After consultations with NBA branch leaders and an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the association unanimously decided to relocate the AGC to Enugu. The city was chosen for its infrastructure and commitment to democratic governance, ensuring a successful and impactful conference.
The NBA reaffirmed its stance on constitutional order and democratic values, highlighting the legal profession’s role in defending the rule of law. The relocation underscores the association’s commitment to upholding these principles.
