NBC Shuts 52 Broadcast Stations for Failure to Renew License

By Anastasia Agunwa:

Media Regulator, National Broadcasting Commission, has shut down about 52 stations for failure to renew licenses after reeled out warning over three months.

In a statement, Director General of the Commission Mallam Balarabe Ilelah said the licences of the 52 stations were revoked as a result of their failure to keep to the 3 months given to them to renew their licences.

The commission said after three months of notification, some licensees are yet to pay their outstanding debts, in contravention of the National Broadcasting Commission Act CAP N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, particularly section 10(a) of the third schedule of the Act.

“In view of this development, the continued operation of the debtor-stations are illegal and constitutes a threat to national security,” said Ilelah.
