Anambra-born Njideka Iyiazi Flies Again, Wins a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games

Anambra-born Njideka Iyiazi has just won a gold medal in the Women’s F56/57 shot put at the ongoing Commonwealth games on Para-Athletics in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

The 49-year-old, a Paralympian athlete who hails from Nri in Anoacha local government area, Anambra State, took the first position in a shot put throw of 10.03 meters while the second position went to Arlette Fokoa a Cameroonian with a throw at 9.38m, and the third position went to another Nigerian, Ugochi Alam with a throw of 9.30m.

This has placed Nigeria in seventh place in the medals standing with eight gold, three silver and seven bronze.

Iyiazi threw a new Commonwealth Games record of 10.03m to win the gold medal for Nigeria.

Recall that Njideka Iyiazi won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Paralympics in the javelin throw, and a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics in the discus throw and shot put throw.

Others were; a bronze medal in the London 2012 Paralympics on shot put throw, 2016 London Paralympics on discus, and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics on shot put throw respectively.
