Former President Olusegun Obasanjo inaugurated the newly reconstructed 46.3-kilometer Joe Irukwu Way in Abia State, Nigeria. The road, which connects Umuahia North, Bende, and Ohafia Local Government Areas, was renamed in honor of the late Joe Irukwu, a prominent insurance expert and former President of Ohaneze Ndigbo.
During the ceremony, Obasanjo praised Governor Alex Otti for his transformative leadership and commitment to infrastructure development. He recounted his previous struggles on the road and expressed amazement at the improvements, which now allow travel from Umuahia to Abiriba in just 45 minutes. Obasanjo emphasized the importance of visionary leadership and urged citizens to support leaders who prioritize good governance.
Governor Otti highlighted the road’s significance in reducing travel time, enhancing security, and lowering transportation costs. He also noted its potential to boost agricultural productivity and economic activities in the region. The project included comprehensive repairs, drainage systems, and solar-powered streetlights to ensure durability and safety.
Local leaders and lawmakers commended the government for alleviating the community’s challenges and improving their quality of life. The road is expected to foster socioeconomic growth and provide lasting benefits to the people of Abia State.
