Anambra State Government through the State Ministry of Health has activated the State’s Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System 112 and currently carrying out rescue operation at the scene of the collapsed building.
“A tragic building collapse occurred on Thursday July 4, 2024 at Eke market in Amawbia , Awka South Local Government Area.
“The incident occurred opposite the Red Cross office and has claimed at least one life which prompted a significant emergency response from multiple agencies and dignitaries in the State.
“At the time of the collapse, an eye witness confirmed that four individuals were inside the building and rescue operations is currently ongoing and two person was extracted from the rubble but unfortunately they did not survive.
“So, efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining individuals trapped under the debris.
” By the activation of Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System by the Commissioner for Health Dr. Afam Obidike.
“The scene is currently being managed by Anambra State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (ASEMSAS), which has deployed six fully equipped ambulances to the site.
“Additional support is being provided by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Fire Service, and the Red Cross, ensuring a comprehensive rescue.
“To aid in the rescue efforts, 2 excavators has been deployed to the scene. This heavy machinery is critical for removing large debris and accessing areas that are difficult to reach manually, allowing for a more holistic approach to the rescue operations.
“Presence of authorities, key government officials and agencies are on ground to oversee the rescue efforts and provide necessary support. Notable figures present include, The Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, The Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) and the State ASEMSAS Coordinator, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu is on ground coordinating the Medical Team from the State Ministry of Health.
“Governor Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo is closely monitoring the situation. Under his leadership, there has been a coordinated effort to manage the crisis and ensure that all necessary resources are deployed efficiently to aid in the rescue and recovery operations.
“This incident underscores the importance of stringent building regulations and safety standards, which the Governor has consistently advocated for.
“The coordinated efforts of ASEMSAS, SEMA, and other agencies highlight the readiness and capability of the state’s emergency response system under the guidance of Governor Soludo. The priority remains to rescue the remaining trapped individuals and provide medical attention to those affected.
“The local community has also shown solidarity and support during this critical time.”
