Obunagu-Amikwo village in Awka-South Local Government Area of Anambra State celebrated as Onuorah Godwin Osonwa, a business mogul and philanthropist, officially handed over the Manari Osonwa Primary Healthcare Centre to the state government.
Built in memory of his late mother, the facility aims to reduce infant and child mortality by providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to his community. Osonwa, who has consistently rejected chieftaincy titles, emphasized that the hospital was a humanitarian project rather than a political endeavor.
At the handover ceremony, Dr. Ben Afam Obidike, Anambra’s Commissioner for Health, praised the initiative as being in line with the government’s mission to enhance comprehensive healthcare services, particularly for rural communities. He highlighted that antenatal and childbirth services remain free across all public health facilities under Governor Charles Soludo’s administration.
Additionally, local government officials, including APGA Chairman Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye and Awka-South Chairman Hon. Chinedu Okafor, applauded Osonwa’s generosity, recognizing it as a model of public-private-community partnership (PPCP). The government has ensured the deployment of human resources and telemedicine services to keep the facility operational 24/7.
Osonwa’s gesture has strengthened efforts to improve healthcare access in the region, aligning with the broader vision of fostering community-led development in Anambra State.
