President Bola Tinubu has lauded the Finnish government for its timely intervention in the arrest and detention of Simon Ekpa, which he said safeguarded Nigeria’s integrity and promoted peaceful coexistence. Tinubu expressed his gratitude during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he received the Letters of Credence from the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin.
The president emphasized that Nigeria would not tolerate divisive actions or statements, underscoring the importance of unity in national progress. “Nigeria is indivisible. We have been through turbulent times, and we don’t want to promote terrorism. Stability and cohesion are essential to move the country forward,” Tinubu remarked.
He further appreciated Finland’s respect for the rule of law and its efforts to uphold human rights in addressing the situation involving Simon Ekpa. Tinubu reiterated that the rule of law remains a cornerstone for safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic values and fostering cooperation.
In her response, Ambassador Selin commended Tinubu for his courage in initiating economic reforms, acknowledging their necessity despite the challenges. She noted that the cooperation between Finland and Nigeria had improved significantly and expressed optimism about opportunities for collaboration, particularly in energy and peace mediation.
The ceremony also saw the president receiving the Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of the European Union, Mr. Gautier Mignot, and the Ambassador of Algeria, Hocine Mezoued. Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s ongoing reforms aimed at stimulating growth and prosperity, highlighting the potential for partnerships in areas such as agriculture, education, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
Tinubu urged the EU to strengthen its ties with Nigeria, particularly in digital transformation and automation of services, and called for enhanced trade relations. “The Nigerian economy can support investments, especially with its vibrant and youthful population,” he said.
With Algeria, Tinubu stressed the importance of regional projects such as the trans-Saharan African Gas Pipeline, advocating for African nations to support one another in fostering development. “We must lift Africa together. Collaboration will make us stronger and more resilient,” the president noted.
Ambassadors Mignot and Mezoued echoed these sentiments, emphasizing shared values, untapped potential, and the importance of regional initiatives for the continent’s development. Both pledged their countries’ continued support for Nigeria in pursuing sustainable progress and enhanced multilateral cooperation.AT REPORTERS
