The President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Joe Ajaero, has shed light on why the union agreed to a N70,000 new minimum wage proposal.
Ajaero while speaking to journalists at the Government House, Abuja after meeting with President Bola Tinubu, cited several incentives accompanying the wage increase as key reasons for their acceptance.
One of the primary reasons for the acceptance, according to Ajaero, was the President Tinubu’s commitment to reviewing the minimum wage every three years, a significant improvement over previous practices.
On Thursday, President Tinubu approved the new minimum wage, confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The announcement was made during a meeting with the leadership of Organized Labour in Abuja, marking their second meeting in a week.
This proposed N70,000 wage is set to replace the current N30,000 minimum wage, which expired on April 18, 2024, pending approval from the National Assembly.
