The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has presented a cheque of N18 million to the Enugu State Government as support for victims of the tragic petrol tanker explosion that occurred on January 25 at Ugwu Onyeama, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The explosion, which claimed several lives and left many injured, was described by Abbas as a national tragedy. He said the donation reflects the commitment of the House of Representatives to stand with communities in times of grief and disaster.
The Speaker, who was represented by members of the Enugu State Caucus in the House — led by Hon. Nnolim Nnaji — expressed condolences to the government and people of Enugu State. Other members of the delegation included Hon. Martins Oke, Hon. Dennis Agbo, Hon. Mark Obetta, Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, and Hon. Chimaobi Atu.
Speaking on behalf of the Speaker, Nnaji commended Governor Peter Mbah for his swift response in supporting the victims and their families.
“On behalf of the Speaker and the House of Representatives, we commiserate with the Government and people of Enugu State over the Ugwu Onyeama tanker explosion. We are aware of the governor’s proactive efforts in reaching out to those affected. This cheque of N18 million is to further support the state in alleviating the burden of this tragedy,” Nnaji said.
In response, Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the Speaker and the House delegation for their solidarity and support.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Enugu State, I sincerely appreciate this gesture. When the incident occurred, the Speaker called to offer prayers and support. Today, he has also demonstrated that commitment through this financial assistance. This fund will be transparently and directly deployed to ease the pains of the affected families,” the governor assured.
Governor Mbah described the gesture as a reflection of Speaker Abbas’ compassionate leadership and a reaffirmation that national unity is strongest in moments of collective support and empathy.
