NNEWI – Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has said that it is deeply worried over the continued disruption of economic activities in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
The rights group on Monday noted that the sit-at-home order initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in 2021 following the detention of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has led to severe economic disruptions, huge losses of financial and human resources in the South-East Zone, as well as created fear and hardship in the zone as businesses, human and traffic movements continued to be disrupted on Mondays in the zone due to the sit-at-home order.
In a statement, titled: “The economic effect of the sit-at-home order and the need to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” signed by the Executive Director of FENRAD, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor and made available to newsmen in Nnewi, yesterday, the rights group noted that the South-East, a vibrant economic progressive zone, has been allegedly a shadow of itself in terms of businesses and other economic activities.
FENRAD urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, saying that the continued detention of the IPOB leader was leading to prolonged of the ugly sit-at-home and dwindling economic situation in the South-East and Nigeria with its attendant hardship.
“This situation, initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following the detention of their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has spiraled into a severe economic crisis for millions of citizens across the region.”
