The Nigerian Police embarrassing delay in releasing the Autopsy report of Jimoh Abdulquadri Olatunji who died in its custody in Ilorin, Kwara State is very shameful and suspicious.
This was why the family in a press conference yesterday, January 27, 2025 called for the case to be transferred out of the Ilorin Police Command.
Recall that immediately after the unfortunate incident occurred, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, visited the family and assured them that the report would be made public as soon as possible. One whole month has passed and there is no report. Even the Autopsy of an elephant will not take this long.
If a policeman of the IGP’s rank cannot keep his word, who else in that profession shall Nigerians believe? It’s beginning to look like the initial prophecy of some skeptics that the true report will not see the light of day is coming true.
Jimoh Olatunji was arrested by his creditor, owed N220,000, and his police brother on the 19th of December. Few minutes after 12 midnight, according to the family, they were called on the phone to come and bail Jimoh. When they eventually got there they found him dead in the mortuary with swollen eyes, blood gushing out of his nose and mouth. It’s anybody’s guess as to what might have happened.
As if to add pepper on the injury, the rumour wafting out is that the Autopsy report may claim that Jimoh died of heart attack and the family Counsel has vowed to reject it, hence they are calling for the transfer of the case out of Ilorin Police Command.
Nigerians are waiting.
