By Paul Nwosu :
The dismantling of criminal cells and gang networks in Anambra State has begun in earnest. The recent overhaul of the state’s security architecture and its evident successes have made it clear that criminals in Anambra are, as Chinua Achebe would say, “no longer at ease.”
The surge in mindless killings and kidnappings by criminals, particularly during a time when Ndi Anambra traditionally spread love and goodwill, was both heartbreaking and embarrassing for Governor Soludo’s administration that has worked tirelessly to ensure that visitors and residents alike enjoy comfort and safety during the festive season.
These criminals didn’t care if their victims were bishops, priests, reverends, or nuns. They shot and killed human beings as if they were game-hunting and plucked people from their vehicles as though they were harvesting corn. It was horrifying to witness such dastardly carnage in a Season that should have been filled with joyous song and dance.

The severity of the situation demanded extraordinary measures, and Governor Soludo rose to the occasion in line with the Igbo adage, “Anu gbá ajọ ọsọ, agbá ya ajọ ègbé” (When an animal runs badly, it must be shot with an equally bad gun).
In the last six weeks, Anambra’s security apparatus has been significantly revamped to address the emergent threats to peace. Governor Soludo held a press conference to announce the launch of “Operation Udo Ga Chi” (Peace Must Reign). As a follow-up to that the initiative was officially unveiled on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the International Convention Centre, Awka.
But even before the formal launch yesterday, the mere announcement of “Operation Udo Ga Chi” seemed to open the gates of hell against criminals in the state. Media reports have been filled with accounts of successful, targeted operations by the joint task force. With the operation now fully underway, the outcomes in the coming weeks are expected to be even more profound.
At the launch event, Governor Soludo outlined the main elements of this security initiative.
1. The Anambra State House of Assembly expedited the passage of the Homeland Security Bill, establishing the “Anambra State Agunechemba” security framework. This bill, signed into law by the governor during the launch, ensures that operatives work within a defined legal structure.
2. Over 200 vehicles have been procured to bolster the capacity of security personnel and reinforce their operations.
3. Cutting-edge tracking systems capable of utilizing voice, video, and data for security management have been installed to enhance operational efficiency.
4. Toll-free emergency lines, 5111, 08002200008, and 112. have been installed to ensure prompt responses to distress calls.
5. To address the surge in arrests, the state will collaborate with Correctional Centers to expand existing facilities and, where necessary, construct state-owned Correctional facilities.
6. The government will rebuild 28 Divisional Police Stations that were destroyed by criminals, ensuring the police are adequately equipped to perform their duties.
7. Communities are encouraged to establish local security governance structures in line with the new law. This will enable them to receive security grants from the government.
8. A monthly reward of N10 million will be given to Police Divisions and Area Commands in local government areas that record zero violent crimes. Communities will also be eligible for rewards.
9. Whistleblowers stand to receive N5 million for information leading to the capture of high-profile criminals.
10. The government has extended an olive branch to kidnappers, cultists, drug dealers, and other criminals willing to surrender their weapons. Those who take advantage of this amnesty, which closes on February 28, 2025, will be rehabilitated and empowered to become productive citizens. Interested individuals should register at the Office of the Security Adviser to the Governor.
11. Governor Soludo emphasized that the government and security teams cannot fight this battle alone. He called on the public to work closely with the authorities by providing critical information about criminal activities. “If you see something, say something,” he urged.
The fight against crime in Anambra is a collective responsibility. With the launch of “Operation Udo Ga Chi,” peace and safety are expected to be restored to the state, ensuring that Ndi Anambra can live, work, and celebrate in an atmosphere free from fear.
