The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, today novermber 11, 2025 welcomed the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Michel Deelen, during an official visit aimed at fostering collaboration in environmental sustainability and development.
Governor Soludo, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. OnyekaChukwu Ibezim hosted the Dutch delegation at a breakfast meeting in Awka. Dr. Ibezim emphasized the state government’s unwavering commitment to creating a clean, green, and livable environment across Anambra.

“Governor Soludo is a visionary leader who sees tomorrow,” the Deputy Governor stated. “His administration is intentional about transforming Anambra into a liveable and prosperous homeland. We are working daily to ensure our cities and communities, like Okpoko, reflect this vision.”
Dr. Ibezim noted that Okpoko, once considered a neglected slum, has now been dubbed “New Heaven” by residents, thanks to the ongoing urban renewal initiatives by the Governor.

The Deputy Governor highlighted key achievements in the area, including the provision of a functional general hospital, construction of quality roads, improved water supply, opening of canal and ongoing environmental clean-up efforts. “We are open to robust partnerships that will accelerate our goals, particularly with institutions like the Kingdom of the Netherlands, renowned for their expertise in circular economy, climate resilience, and urban planning,” he added.
Dr Ibezim welcomed the delegation on behalf of the state Governor as he expressed optimism about future partnerships.

Among the visiting delegation were Opeyemi Oriniwo, Policy Adviser on Economic Affairs and Public Diplomacy; Natalie Beinisch, Executive Director of the Circular Economic Innovation Partnership; and Obaloluwa Dairo, Lead for Venture and Policy Development at the Consulate General, Lagos who were present to represent the Consul General.
In his contribution, the Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odimegwu stated that
The Governor’s vision for a clean and sustainable Anambra is already taking shape, and partnerships like this will only strengthen our capacity. He expressed confidence in the collaboration with the Dutch. “We are excited to work with the Dutch government on long-term solutions that will improve the well-being of our people and protect our environment.”

The Netherlands Consulate team expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated their interest in supporting Anambra’s journey toward environmental innovation and sustainable development.
The visit also included discussions on potential collaboration in waste management, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure.
