Prominent Nigerians have hailed the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, as a “quintessential statesman” dedicated to the pursuit of peace and progress in Nigeria.
Tributes were paid during a Service of Songs in Enugu on Saturday.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah referred to Iwuanyanwu as an ‘Iroko,’ emphasizing that his absence will be profoundly felt across the nation, particularly in Igbo land.
“Iwuanyanwu exemplified generosity, courage, and wisdom, serving as a bridge builder who united diverse communities during challenging times. The sense of loss from his passing is not one that time can heal. His love for Ndigbo and commitment to Nigeria coexisted harmoniously, demonstrating that one can cherish both tribe and country equally,” he stated.
Prof. Uche Azikiwe, widow of Nigeria’s first President, Nnamdi Azikiwe, highlighted Iwuanyanwu’s unique contributions, calling him a trailblazer who paved the way for future generations of entrepreneurs.
“He embodied foresight and the resilient spirit of the Igbo, showcasing a remarkable ability to create and give,” she remarked.
Chief Okey Emuchey, Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, described Iwuanyanwu as an iconic national figure who dedicated his life to the peace and progress of both Ndigbo and Nigeria.
Chief Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Youth Wing, noted Iwuanyanwu’s efforts to revitalize the youth wing, ensuring it remained vibrant and influential. “He was a father figure, a role model, and a passionate leader committed to uplifting our youth,” he said.
Umuada Igbo, representing Igbo women in the South-East, Delta, and Rivers States, urged state governments to honor Iwuanyanwu’s legacy. Chief Kate Ezeofor, President General of Umuada Igbo Nigeria and Diaspora, called for immortalizing Iwuanyanwu, praising his service to the Igbo people and his status as a true Nigerian patriot.
The funeral rites for Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on July 25 at the age of 82, will commence on Tuesday, October 29, with his burial scheduled for November 1, 2024.
