U20 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria Falconets Defeats Canada, to Qualify for Quarter-Finals

By Ifeyinwa Ogwo :

Nigeria U-20 Women’s team, Falconets defeated Canada 3-1 at the Estadio Alajuela Morere Soto, in the ongoing Federation International Football Association(FIFA) U20 Women’s World Cup taking place in Costa Rica, to qualify for the quarter-final.

The first and sole goal by Canadian Kala Novak against the falconets less than two minutes into the game was an error in the falconet defense.

Then later the falconets merited two penalty kicks which were carried out by Esther Onyenezide, giving the Falconets an edge over the Canadian girls. Another goal was scored in the second half by Chioma Olisa.

The Head Coach of the falconets, Chris Danjuman noted that the girls are prepared to win, to sustain their winning mentality following hard-fought victories over France and Korea Republic.

“Although the Canadian first goal of the competition against the falconets was poor ball management between goalkeeper Omini Oyono and defender Jumoke Alani later, with character and spirit, the girls bounced back from the setback,” he said.

The falconets defected France and Korea Republic earlier with a 1-0 victory in their separate games, to top the table with 9 points and will meet with the Netherlands in Alajuela on Monday for the quarter-final.
