The Abia State government has announced that developers will no longer receive approval for constructing three-storey buildings without elevators. This decision, aimed at enhancing safety and habitability, was emphasized during a training session for the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) personnel.
Architect Uche Ukeje, General Manager of GADA, represented by Enyinnaya Romanus, Head of the Building Control Unit, highlighted the need for strict building control measures to prevent collapses, protect lives and properties, and ensure environmentally friendly construction.
Ukeje stressed that developers must obtain necessary approvals at various construction stages, including foundation casting, drainage, and waste disposal plans. He also warned against piping waste to drainage systems and emphasized that any developer contravening these standards would face prosecution if not corrected within the allotted time.
The government aims to maintain high building standards through stage-by-stage monitoring and supervision, ensuring that buildings are safe, fit, and habitable. The era of building without adherence to standards is over, and digitalized operations will allow for easy project status checks.
Ukeje concluded that GADA is committed to improving building standards and working with environmental health officials to protect the environment.
