The World Bank, in partnership with the Ebonyi State Government, on Monday, launched an orientation program for newly engaged Skilled Birth Attendants (SBAs) to enhance healthcare delivery across the state.
The program, held at the Abakaliki Local Government Council Headquarters, Nkaliki, was officially flagged off by the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma. He stated that the training would guide 328 newly recruited ad-hoc staff, who will be deployed to 164 selected primary healthcare facilities across the state’s 13 local government areas.
Project Manager Impact, Mr. Patrick Njoku, stressed the critical role of SBAs in improving healthcare outcomes, particularly in reducing maternal and child mortality rates. He urged the new recruits to prioritize self-development and uphold professionalism in their duties.
Similarly, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Primary Healthcare, Dr. Sabinus Nwibo, advised the ad-hoc workers to remain diligent, disciplined, and committed. He warned that truancy and misconduct would not be tolerated, and those found negligent would be dismissed. He also cautioned against bribery or any attempt to influence postings, describing the initiative as a rescue mission to revitalize previously struggling government-owned healthcare centers.
The Chairman of the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (Southeast Zone), Comrade Nwede Peter, highlighted the importance of professional conduct. He stressed the need for proper registration, licensing, and renewal, warning that violations could result in license revocation.
Welcoming the participants, the Executive Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Council, Chief Hon. Stephen Ebere Nwogba, praised the initiative. He commended Governor Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for prioritizing healthcare and assured continued support for effective service delivery in the area.
The orientation exercise allowed ad-hoc workers and healthcare officials to discuss key issues related to training, professional practice, and remuneration. The initiative underscores the commitment of the Ebonyi State Government and its development partners to strengthening healthcare services and ensuring quality care at the grassroots level.
